Sensorless drive is energy-efficient

Fourth Quarter 2008 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

The new KEB ASCL (asynchronous sensorless closed loop) variable speed drive offers real vector control without feedback as a solution for speed control of pumps, fans and compressors.

Major benefits include:

* High energy savings.

* Excellent speed and torque accuracy.

* Dynamic regulation of load jumps.

* Automatic calculation of the motor by the inverter – auto tune function.

* No encoder, encoder interface or encoder cabling required for feedback.

* Drive calculates the optimum momentary values of motor voltage and current under present load conditions.

The KEB ASCL achieves energy savings by delivering the exact voltage to the motor dependent on the load condition, exact adaptation to the quadratic speed torque characteristic of the pump/fan and automatic reduction of the output voltage in a part load condition. In addition there is no over-magnetisation of the motor, and therefore no additional no-load losses.

Accurate speed and torque control guarantees slip-free speed control for exact flow and delivery quantity. The torque can be limited to protect drive and motor.

Dynamic control of load jumps ensures speed stability thus reducing wear and eliminating current peaks during acceleration and load change.

The speed dependent timer function can be used in compressor applications to organise maintenance intervals dependent on the speed of operation and drain valves can be opened after a dedicated number of revolutions.

In applications like pump dosing, positioning can be achieved without a sensor.
