Drive engineered for 28-year MTBF

At the launch of the recently released Yaskawa J1000 AC drive its manufacturer described it as the world’s smallest compact drive in size.

The new drive was designed with three main principles in mind: quality, reduced cost of ownership; and maintainability.

Through careful design, component selection, manufacture and a reduction in part count Yaskawa has achieved a mean time between failure (MTBF) rate of an impressive 28 years.

One of the ways in which reduced cost of ownership is achieved is through the compact design, side-by-side mounting and the ability to control a larger motor with the normal duty rating.

External braking resistors are not required with the J1000 since stop times can be reduced using over-excitation braking. Fast stop times can also be achieved using the standard internal braking transistor in conjunction with a braking resistor. Shorter stopping times can have a direct beneficial impact on manufacturing costs since cycle times can be reduced.

The J1000 can be maintained using Yaskawa’s Drive Wizard Plus software and the USB Copy Unit (Y-Stick). This allows for file storage that can be used to program multiple drives quickly or for future back-up use. Maintainability is also provided by lifetime monitors that continuously monitor the health of the key components.

The J1000 is available from 0,12 to 5,5 kW and in voltage classes of 200–240 V single-phase and 380–480 V three-phase, at frequencies of 50/60 Hz. The J1000 shares a common programming language with its V1000 cousin as well as forward compatibility with future products, ensuring quick set-up modes, easy programming, and reduced start-up times.

Standard features of the J1000 include an open loop V/f control with a speed range of 40:1, both a normal (120% overload for 60 sec) and heavy duty (150% overload for 60 sec) rating, a starting torque of 150% at 3 Hz, a 5-digit LED keypad, increased vibration resistance from 20 Hz to 50 Hz and a swing PWM function to decrease audible motor noise. It also includes an output frequency of 0–400 Hz, Modbus communication at up to 38,4 kbps, a short circuit current rating of 30 kA rms symmetrical, an ingenious pre-maintenance function, a preferred parameter feature and ‘no tools required’ cooling fan replacement.

The J1000 is designed for industrial applications such as material handling, food and beverage, fan and pump control, packaging, agricultural machines and industrial washers. It includes CE, UL and cUL global certification approval and is RoHS compliant.
