Siemens bridges the skills gap

3rd Quarter 2010 News & events

Siemens has adopted a multifaceted approach to skills development that establishes the levels of prevailing knowledge within an enterprise, matches this with a needs analysis, and then offers training courses aimed at bridging the gap.

Sitrain is the company’s customer training organisation for the Industrial Automation division and Drive Technologies division.

The new Midrand premises at Siemens Park has an area with five classrooms and several demonstration rooms with installed equipment that facilitates a combination of theoretical and practical training.

“The needs analysis forms part of an holistic overview of the automation process, involving one-on-one interviews with staff to identify gaps and give advice on how to close those,” says Des Burrows, business unit manager at Sitrain. “Following this exercise, we are able to choose the appropriate courses for the customer and where non-Siemens equipment is installed, offer advice on where to source training for those third party relationships.”

Sitrain has also introduced two specialised hands-on courses that will assist delegates find faults or troubleshoot on PLC drives. “The five-day S7 Troubleshooting course and the two-day Drives Maintenance course will equip the customer with all the skills necessary for first line maintenance, saving a considerable amount of money as no callout is then necessary,” he says.

Other courses available with Engineering Council of South Africa validation include:

* Process control systems.

* S7 Pro 1 and 2.

* Scada WinCC.
