Re-inventing the wheel

3rd Quarter 2010 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Variable displacement = flexibility + control.

The variable displacement technology built into the TSW8 series of radial piston motors from SAI provides flexibility in terms of speed and power regulation, load and braking ability. The high volumetric efficiency minimises leakage and enables accurate movement and positioning to be achieved.

These features make variable displacement motors well suited to applications with high external loads (over 20 tonnes), self-propelled vehicles, augers and winches. The hydraulic motor options in the TSW8 comprise a seven piston radial piston motor and incorporate a planetary gearbox.

Drive flexibility

The company’s new range of robust compact modular wheel drives achieve high load carrying capability and are available with integrated static and dynamic brakes, integrated speed sensors and continuously variable displacement. They have a programmable control that allows regulation of the ramping up and down of the motor displacement.

The high overall efficiency of the motor enables the recovery of the inertial energy of the vehicle when hydraulically braking the wheels. This form of power regeneration further increases the efficiency of the machine.

Traction control

Even greater steps in re-inventing the wheel can be achieved from integrating suspension and steering systems to offer independent traction control to each wheel. SAI has recently developed electronic proportional control of the motor displacement and this offers many possibilities in terms of distributing the traction to each wheel, according to the actual adherence of each wheel with the ground.

The anti-slip control system uses sensors to detect whether the wheels are spinning and then automatically reduces the engine power. This optimises acceleration, especially at the start, when leaving a corner and on wet tracks.
