An academic support programme for township children in Ivory Park, IkamvaYouth, is being encouraged and supported by Schneider Electric.
Recently a group of Schneider staff visited Ikamva and made interactive presentations on the many career opportunities that school-leavers can explore with a matric qualification. The theme of the afternoon was, 'When you master crawling, you will walk and when you are able to walk, keep walking against all odds'. Scientific calculators, stationery packs and teaching DVDs were also presented. Grade 10 and 11 learners could hardly contain their enthusiasm for the eye opening and motivational session.
Over the past three years IkamvaYouth learners have achieved a 90% matric pass rate and between 60% to 70% of the learners on the programme have gained access to tertiary education (the township average is less than 5%). Translated, 'Ikamva lisezandleni zethu' means 'The future is in our hands'.
