Energy efficient bearings

3rd Quarter 2011 Shaft power components

Over the past decades bearing design, materials and production processes have changed significantly to meet ever changing market requirements.

Forty years ago, bearings were selected mainly by their carrying capacity. When the SKF Explorer performance class was introduced, bearing service life and reliability came into focus. Today, carrying capacity and life are still important, but many applications need energy efficient bearing solutions to meet growing environmental energy saving requirements.

Since 2007, SKF has offered E2 deep groove ball bearings and taper roller bearings, which reduce frictional moment by 30% and more. Now the assortment is complemented by E2 double row angular contact ball bearings.

Reduced operating temperature

E2 double row angular contact ball bearings have an optimised internal geometry. They are filled with a special low friction grease and are capped with shields made of sheet steel. Depending on operating conditions, they can save at least 30% of frictional moment compared to standard bearings, in many cases 50% or more. Due to the reduced friction, the bearing can run from 5 to 30° cooler, significantly increasing the service life of the grease.

Universal design

As they are fully interchangeable with SKF basic design bearings, the E2 bearings enable easy upgrades of existing applications as well as improving new designs. This helps end users to save energy and cost and supports original equipment manufacturers in the design and marketing of new, energy efficient consumer products. In addition to the existing SKF Explorer range, several sizes of energy efficient bearings are available in the 32 A and 33 A series,
