The Zest WEG Group recently provided two generators and funding for a year’s supply of diesel and gas, as well as the repair of two kitchens, at the Soweto Kliptown Youth Centre (SKY) in Soweto.
SKY was founded in 1987 by Bob Nameng – when he was just 16 years old – as an after-school care facility and Nameng still heads up the centre today as its director. The centre’s services have extended to provide social services to those affected by poverty, abuse and abandonment, serving as the only operational orphanage in the Kliptown area.
Bob Nameng raises his hands in joy with the children of the Soweto Kliptown Youth Centre while Zest WEG Group MD Louis Meiring looks on.
“Although the Centre is registered as a non-profit organisation, it has yet to receive any government funding,” says Zest WEG Group MD Louis Meiring. “It relies on the generosity of individuals and its own fundraising initiatives as well as international and corporate donations.
“SKY had been running without electricity for many months when we were introduced to it in November 2011 through the children’s charity Touch Africa. Not only was electricity a problem, but the kitchens were in disrepair and almost unusable. Since it was perfectly aligned with our business activities, we enthusiastically embarked on a project to install generators to electrify its facilities and repair the kitchens,” Meiring says.
