Hansen supplies gearboxes to Namibian mine

Hansen Transmissions recently secured a repeat order from a leading South African mining technology company for the supply of seven gearboxes for a Namibian mine.

“When the mine started detecting some mechanical equipment problems on site about two years ago, we immediately offered our assistance, applied our knowledge and experience of mixer drives and arrived at a suitable solution for the application,” says HTSA managing director, Fritz Fourie.

“We recommended that the mine purchase QVPK-4-UDL 110 kW Hansen P4 gearboxes transmitting a torque of 71,5 kN.m with a 125:1 ratio to drive mixers/agitators as part of the mine’s leaching process.”

“The Hansen P4 gearboxes were to be used for carrying large axial and radial loads imposed by the mixer blades so we supplied an UDL arrangement. This is the largest mixer shaft we could offer for a unit of this size that involves larger bearings and bearing span as well as a low speed shaft,” continues Fritz and adds: “This is a standard option for mixer drives, so customer specifications did not present any problems. We also supply this size unit as standard with a filter to filter used oil and a flow switch as protection if, for any reason, insufficient oil is being supplied to the top bearings.”

Fritz says that while the customer was responsible for installation and commissioning of the Hansen P4 gearboxes, that the HTSA technical team is always available to assist the customer with maintenance, spares and any other after sales service support.

“Our gearboxes are designed to last for 100 000 hours, running 24 hours a day, provided that a professional maintenance schedule is followed so we have placed maintenance programmes at the customers’ disposal to ensure correct, effective maintenance schedules are followed,” concludes Fourie.
