SAFPA training course highlights safety aspects of hydraulic hose assembly

The recent plethora of new safety standards issued both locally and internationally in respect of the mining, mechanical and manufacturing industries is commendable - in theory. However, applying them in practise in another story altogether. South African safety statistics across a broad spectrum of industries clearly indicates a lack of adherence to even the most basic of principles.
The South African Fluid Power Association (SAFPA), that places great emphasis on training and guidance for hydraulic hose companies, recognised the need for additional education focused on the safety aspect of hydraulics, has announced a new training course to provide an introduction to hydraulic hose and connectors, and the safe assembly of these components.
The course was initially developed by SAFPA’s counterpart, the British Fluid Power Association, and was very well received in the United Kingdom. It runs for a full day, and has been designed for OEM artisans, foremen, supervisors, managers and all personnel involved in the assembly and supply of hydraulic hose and connectors. At present, the course is offered in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. In addition to the open courses, in-house courses are conducted on application.
The courses are presented by accredited SAFPA trainers, members of the industry with vast experience and knowledge. The content includes basic hydraulics; health, safety and the environment; hose and connector identification; hose assembly and installation; hose and connector failure. Upon completion, participants will have the knowledge that enables them to select hose and hose connectors correctly and safely; have the ability to demonstrate the key processes that ensure safe manufacture of hydraulic hoses; be aware of the dangers associated with incorrectly specified, assembled and installed hoses; understand the effects of contamination in hydraulic systems and the methods of ensuring contamination-free hoses.
It is expected that this safety course will raise the degree of safety in the industry, which in turn, will lead to a higher level of compliance with safety standards and conformance to specifications in hose assembly. In addition, there should be a noticeable improvement in the performance of hose assemblies, a reduction in maintenance downtime and greater productivity.
