Superior lubrication

Manufacturing plants with open gear systems often have problems with gear protection products. Asphaltic products can cause a build-up of hardened lubricant in the roots of the gears. This presents multiple problems related to cleaning and mechanical interference and can result in build-up or stress on the pedestal mountings. In addition large gear systems are often overloaded and to cope with the problem operators apply increasing amounts of lubricant.
In response to these problems global lubrication manufacturer Lubrication Engineers developed Pyroshield, a heavy duty synthetic oil designed to provide protection for high-load, heavy-shock applications. An example is the large shrouded open gears that are used in mining, mineral processing and cement industries. Local distributor Filter Focus has implemented lubrication programmes using Pyroshield at manufacturing plants across southern Africa. One of many successful programmes is at Lonmin Platinum’s Baobab site in Limpopo, where the concentrator’s ball mill girth gears were converted to Pyroshield.
Filter Focus chief operating officer Craig FitzGerald says that since applying Pyroshield to the girth gears, Baobab has recorded a reduced power consumption on each 2500 kW mill of up to 200 kW. An independent vibration analysis carried out by ABB showed a reduction in pinion vibration of up to 15%. Pyroshield also reduced hydrocarbon contamination and increased the recovery of platinum group metals by 0,75 to 1%. Noise levels on site were also reduced, and the superior quality of Pyroshield resulted in the site using 35% less lubricant in comparison to the inferior product previously used. Pyroshield is successfully being used on more than 140 open gear systems worldwide.
