SKF has added disc couplings to its power transmission family. These combine robust performance with all-steel components, making them ideal for the stringent demands of high speed applications such as direct drive fan drives, pumps, compressors and high speed turbine drives typically found in the mining, general industry and marine sectors.
Compared to their elastomeric counterparts, these disc couplings have less overhang loads due to their compact size as well as smaller space requirements due to their light-weight construction. This facilitates installation, keeping downtime to a minimum. Furthermore, the all-steel components extend the coupling’s lifecycle while the stainless steel coupling element ensures reliable operation. There is no friction between components, so no wear and tear, and heat energy losses are low. Maintenance is reduced as no lubrication is required.
They have medium to high torque capability with torsional rigidity up to 178 kN. This allows rapid acceleration in faster moving equipment due to less deflection – an advantage for machines that require accurate and smooth operation at optimum efficiency. Additional benefits offered by the disc couplings include quiet operation and zero backlash. They can also operate efficiently when slight misalignment is present after installation. There is no need for re-alignment as the disc pack, or spacer, can be removed without moving the prime mover and driven machine, and the parallel offset with double disc pack configuration means that the couplings can handle shafts that are not completely parallel. The stainless steel element has a rated temperature of 250°C for extended element life.
