Motion control life saver

2nd Quarter 2011 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Precision flying in emergency and rescue situations is a crucial factor in saving lives. What makes today’s professional flight training so effective is the ability of training simulators to create the most realistic flying motion possible. The better the fidelity of the training, the better the chances of survival.

Moog is a manufacturer of high performance motion control solutions and is at the forefront of state-of-the-art electric and hydraulic motion control systems and components used for flight training and simulation.

Simulation training has a broad range of motion requirements. For flight training, there is a need for large actuators with nominal 1,52 m of stroke and output forces up to 14 000 kg. Control loading systems provide tactile feedback to the pilot by synthesising the feel of pedals and control sticks in response to the pilot’s commands. The motion base has to be capable of moving the complete simulator assembly of cockpit, visual displays and instructor station. Smooth operation is mandatory, as is low noise generation. The net result is that the flight crew is immersed in the virtual world of flight.

Moog motion controllers consist of motor drives, logic circuits and a motion computer which interfaces with the host computer through an Ethernet communication protocol. The motor controllers close position loops with the brushless motors used in the Moog actuators. Ball screws are used to translate the motor rotary motion to the linear output motion required for flight simulation.
