Hytec Secunda was tasked with overseeing the urgent repair of two hydraulic cylinders for a large regional customer. Working with Hytec Engineering, the cylinders were delivered and installed in just 10 days, despite the challenges of South Africa’s nationwide Covid-19 lockdown over the period, ensuring downtime on these important plant functions was kept to a minimum.
Hytec Secunda was responsible for all site work, as well as transport of the cylinders between the plant and Hytec Engineering’s cylinder manufactory in Johannesburg. There, the 250/115 x 1060 FF filter press cylinder was overhauled, including stripping, inspection, refurbishment, honing and testing. This cylinder works in a filter press that solidifies gunk and separates the liquid from the solids for further processing.
Hytec Engineering also manufactured a new cylinder for a flopper gate. An older cylinder is also currently being repaired and this will be used as the backup cylinder for the equipment in the future.
“Repairing an hydraulic cylinder can be far more cost-effective than purchasing a new one,” explains Andre Lindeque, Hytec Engineering’s general manager. “The challenge was to rapidly coordinate the service of this equipment in line with the lockdown restrictions to minimise downtime of these essential plant processes.”
Hytec Engineering provides end-to-end hydraulic cylinder services for mines and industries across sub-Saharan Africa.

Hydraulic systems & components
Those working with hydraulic or pneumatic systems know that keeping your machinery running at peak performance balances productivity and cost. As systems age, they often become less efficient, requiring more energy and more frequent repairs. The good news is that you don’t always need to invest in an entirely new machine to solve these problems.
