How much is a second worth?
First Quarter 2021
Hydraulic systems & components
According to www.gov.za, the national minimum wage in South Africa is R20,76 for each ordinary hour worked. We work eight hours a day to support us for the other sixteen. If you worked an eight hour day, at R20,76 per hour, you could make R166,08 in a day.
By this logic, we can determine the minimum value of a second expressed in ZAR. Every hour is worth R20,76 and every minute is worth R0,346. Each second is worth R0,00576 at least. That number seems laughably low if you think about it, but seconds can really add up.
How many seconds does it cost when the power goes out and 16,8 million people can’t do their jobs? If 16,8 million people are not working for just one hour of loadshedding, the country potentially loses R348 768 000 in productive time measured at the minimum wage. Maybe this is not the right way to think about a second in a human life. Time is worth more than just money.
How many memories could you relive in a second? How long does it take to have a great idea? How do you calculate the value of a second when you can never get back the time you’ve wasted?
What is a second worth to you?
