Acoustic imaging detector for gas leaks and partial discharge

Third Quarter 2024 Hydraulic systems & components

The new SUTO iTEC S532 acoustic imaging detector provides an easy and effective way to locate pressurised air and gas leaks and partial discharge (PD) in industrial high-voltage environments. By using a large 11 cm LCD touch screen, the results overlaid on a visual image locate the source of problems quickly. The S532 device detects electrical partial discharge activities and quantifies the type based on sound frequency, displaying the real-time status in live view for your reference.

Electrical partial discharge types are summarised as follows:

Corona discharge occurs on the sharp surface of a conductor surrounded by gas. It usually happens in electrical systems like high-voltage power lines, transformers, or electric motors.

Floating discharge, one of the arcing discharges, happens when the electrical current flows through the conducting path created by voltage difference between two conductors. It can occur in various situations, such as high-voltage power transmission systems, electrical switches, or circuit breakers.

Surface discharge refers to the electrical discharge travelling along the surface of the insulation. It is primarily caused by contamination and high humidity on the insulator surface. It often occurs in high-voltage equipment, such as transformers, cables, switch gear and motors.

Particle discharge refers to the partial discharge of electrical energy that interacts with metallic particles and debris present in the electrical systems. It can result from loose particles or particles generated by mechanical wear, corrosion, or degradation of insulation materials.

Compressed air and gas leakage detection (LD) detects and estimates real-time air or gas leak rate, leak cost, and leak level for reference. It can take photographs, record voice notes, and log the leak tag number and location. Report writing is made easy and fast when using the leak monitoring software (LMS) package.

Compressed air is notorious for generating enormous amounts of wastage, and with that comes huge electricity bills. Air leaks can easily cost 30% of your compressed air production. This auditing tool is ideal for the auditing professional as it connects integrates seamlessly to the SUTO iTEC LMS software that makes report writing a breeze.

The compressed air system can be monitored for flow, pressure and power, and it can even provide an overview of compressor efficiency per compressor. This can then be evaluated and compared with the percentage of compressed air wasted to atmosphere through leaks.

Artic Driers offers a broad-based air auditing service focused on compressed air and gas monitoring for air volume rates, pressure, power consumption, dewpoint, oil vapour carryover and particle counts.

It is suitable for pipelines from 15 to over 400 mm, and is compatible with most gases with pressures from vacuum to over 40 bar. Auditing has an extremely fast payback time, and leak detection can be undertaken during normal business working hours.
