A field question sparked the journey toward a safer solution. When a simple inquiry, “What about the Hilux?”, posed a challenge, it ignited the innovative spirit at Axiom Hydraulics.


Sometimes, breakthrough ideas emerge not from complex dilemmas, but from straightforward questions that lead to new possibilities.

For years, we’ve partnered with Ausco Products to deliver world-class braking solutions to the southern African mining industry. Together, we’ve helped improve vehicle safety through proven braking technologies, particularly for the Toyota Land Cruiser where Ausco’s enclosed wet braking systems have earned a reputation for reliability in some of the toughest operating environments.

But as our customers’ fleets evolved, so did the conversations.

Seeing an opportunity

The Toyota Hilux had become one of the most common light-duty vehicles on mine sites. From transporting engineers and maintenance teams to supporting production and safety personnel, these vehicles had become indispensable. Yet despite their widespread use, there wasn’t a braking solution purpose-built for the unique demands of mining.

That presented an opportunity. Not simply to develop another product, but to solve a genuine industry challenge.

Working alongside the engineering team at Ausco Products, we combined their world-renowned braking expertise with Axiom Hydraulics’ understanding of local mining operations and customer requirements. Every discussion, every design review and every decision was driven by one objective: to create a safer, more reliable braking system for one of mining’s hardest-working vehicles.

The result is the Ausco 15 Series Wheel-End Braking System for the Toyota Hilux.

Replacing the factory rear drum brakes with an open-calliper disc brake assembly, the system integrates with the vehicle’s existing hydraulic master cylinder, requiring minimal modification while delivering improved braking performance and simplified maintenance.

Each rear wheel is fitted with an integrated Electric Park Brake (EPB), complete with its own electronic controller and dedicated wiring harness. Operated through a simple in-cab switch, the EPB provides secure parking capability while adding another layer of confidence in demanding operating conditions.

Importantly, the system has achieved ECER13 certification for vehicles up to 2910 kg, confirming compliance with internationally recognised braking standards for on-road use while meeting the expectations of mining operations where reliability is non-negotiable.


Listening to the customer

Projects like this are a reminder that innovation is rarely the work of one company alone. It comes from partnerships built on trust, shared expertise and a willingness to listen.

The collaboration between Axiom Hydraulics and Ausco Products is a reflection of that philosophy. Together, we’ve taken a question from the field

and transformed it into a practical engineering solution, one that we believe will help shape the future of light-duty vehicle safety across southern Africa’s mining industry.

Because at the end of the day, the best engineering isn’t measured by the products we build. It’s measured by the people who return home safely because of them.
