Using the correct hose bore size

3rd Quarter 2013 Hydraulic systems & components

According to Genflex Hydraulics, many trucks and trailers are using the wrong hydraulic hose bore sizes for the pumps that have been fitted. After investigation Genflex has established that hydraulic hoses with bore sizes of 9,6 mm and 12,7 mm cannot deliver the specified literage capacity through the system that the pump generates. Most of these hydraulic systems only operate periodically and are not in use during the driving of the vehicle but only when the vehicle is loaded or unloaded.

Alan Cosgrove of Genflex Hydraulics said, “The recommended literage through a 12 mm hose is 25 litres per minute and through a 10 mm hose it is 15 litres per minute. Any more than this will eventually lead to excess heat in the system, limiting the life of the hydraulic hose and causing cavitation in the pumps and further wear in the cylinders and valves.”

Every means should be utilised to keep the temperature of the oil below 1000°C. The ideal temperature is around 700°C and forcing oil through smaller bores causes overheating. If hoses are chafing, they should be strapped away from the obstruction or protected with a hose protector such as Genflex’s Spiral Guard hose cover. “With a pump capacity of 60 litres, 20 mm hose should be used on pressure lines and 25 mm hose on the return lines,” added Cosgrove. Flow charts for pressure lines, return lines and suction lines, traditionally available through any technical hose specification catalogue, are now available from Genflex Hydraulics.

SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
