Using pre-emptive detection, the SD700 variable speed drive can take pre-emptive corrective action before the drive trips. This can save production losses through plant stoppage.

The model SD700 VSD (variable speed drive) from European manufacturer Power Electronics is available in ratings from 2,2 kW to 1,8 MW in the operating temperature range of -30 to +50°C and for supply voltages of 230, 400, 525 and 690 V.

High availability design

A significant innovation incorporated in the SD700 is fault prevention algorithms (FPA) that aim to prevent the drive from tripping under extreme operating conditions, whilst still providing protection for drive and motor. By using pre-emptive detection, the drive can take pre-emptive corrective action before the drive trips. This can save production losses through plant stoppage.

In the event of a failure, downtime is minimised through the modularity of the design and full front access to electronics, cooling, filtration and other sub-assemblies and components.

The display unit also provides a fault history to improve diagnostic efficiency.

High availability support

All drives in the SD700 series are covered by a 3-year warranty and 24/7/365 technical service backup – another factor that should help to keep downtime to an absolute minimum.

Application

The drive can be applied to a wide range of applications, including crane and elevator control, milling and mixing, packing machine control, pump systems, crushers, lamination machines and many others. Configuration is simplified through the use of application specific macros for tasks like pumping and crushing.

The pump control macro provides PID control over flow, pressure or temperature, is configurable in engineering units (l/s, m³/s, °C, %,) and has provision for various pump sequence control settings such as no alternation, sequential alternation and sequence by run-hours. Functions such as pipe fill, anti-cavitation, overpressure and no-flow detection are included. These combine with other benefits of VSD application to pumping to provide powerful, energy efficient pumping solutions.

Installation

These floor-standing units are available in either IP20 or IP54 enclosures. The latter allow the drives to be used in difficult environments, such as areas with damp conditions or corrosive gases. This is possible due to the fact that the drive cooling fans and heatsinks are fully separated from the section of the cabinet that houses the electronics.

Other features

Other features include isolated control inputs and outputs, built-in RFI filters and output chokes for reducing both mains borne and radiated interference. Frame sizes 1 and 2 (6A – 48A) incorporate dynamic braking as standard, while this is available in a separate module for larger sizes.

The removable 4-line display can be mounted up to 3 m away from the drive and incorporates LEDs for status indication as well as keys for configuration, start, stop and reset.

With Modbus built in as a standard protocol, the drives can be easily integrated into larger control systems or linked to PLCs or scada systems. Other available communication protocols include Profibus-DP, Ethernet, DeviceNet and N2 Metasys. There is also an optional fibre-optics board available for noise-free communication between multiple drives.

It is also possible to communicate to the drives remotely via GSM, GPRS, SMS or Internet, to extract information such as running hours or fault conditions or in order to start and stop the drives.

Optional HMI

The optional SD7TD graphic display with touch screen provides an intuitive display and can be used to store multiple customised drive configurations.

Power Electronics also manufactures a range of soft starters.
