Fluidtronik delivers in record time

3rd Quarter 2010 Hydraulic systems & components

Fluidtronik recently completed the first of two orders worth 5 million rand each for Bosch Projects, a specialised sugar equipment supplier based in Durban.

This involved delivery of the complete hydraulic system for a chainless diffuser to be installed in the state of Bihar in India. It was delivered within a staggering eight weeks from the date of order. This included detailed design, manufacture, assembly and full in-house testing.

The system comprised a Retract Motion Control system and a Forward Motion Control system. These were made up of:

* 24 heavy duty hydraulic cylinders.

* 24 control blocks integrated on the cylinders.

* Four power pack units.

* Four transducer panels.

* A nonwelded piping system.

* Electrical prewiring

In addition 12 off LVDTs were integrated within each of the forward motion cylinders for accurate position control.

Unique features

Fluidtronik incorporated several unique features into the design: stainless steel reservoirs were used to prevent internal corrosion caused by condensation; a failsafe control system allowed the cylinder to float whilst the opposite cylinder was being activated; pump unloading through the LS vent allowed for an extra smooth decompression stage before switching direction solenoid valves; and heavy duty cylinders with a unique sealing and bearing design were used.

In addition pressure transducers monitored the individual diffuser screen loading and served as an interlock to switch the direction of the control valve only when pressure was decompressed. The leak-free piping system was flared and flanged with no welds.

Successful simulation

Before shipping the system to India. Fluidtronik built a mockup of the diffuser in order to simulate and test the complete hydraulic system together with the instrumentation. The in-house tests were very successful. Fluidtronik now has the ability to pre-test and ship this type of system anywhere in the world.

Bosch Projects has more projects in the pipeline in Africa, India and Brazil and Fluidtronik is looking forward to supplying many more of these systems.

Heinz von Fintel, MD of Fluidtronik, elaborates that this achievement was made possible by his hardworking, motivated team of engineers and artisans as well as excellent service from numerous reputable suppliers.

He is very proud of the quality of the product and the professional approach his company displayed in executing the project.

SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
