A new range of brakes and clutches

4th Quarter 2013 Pneumatic systems & components

PECS is offering a new range of pneumatic brakes and clutches from the US company, Gummi, for use especially in mining applications.

Gummi’s drum style pneumatic clutches and brakes include the most popular configurations, both expanding and constricting types. These are FK (CB), FKE (EB), FKR (ER), FM (CM), FKT (VC) and DX (Dy-A-Flex). These six configurations are 100% interchangeable with all other clutch brands on the market today.

Gummi constricting brakes and clutches radially engage the outer diameter of a drum when pressurised. The inward expansion of the cord-reinforced air tube forces the friction shoe assemblies against the outer diameter of the drum’s surface. The rate at which the air tube is pressurised directly affects the rate at which the torque increases.

Due to its reliability and simplicity of design, the versatile FK model is well suited as a clutch or brake in a large number of high speed, low to medium torque applications where high heat generation is not a factor. With a torque of up to 23 840 Nm, the unique design of the FK allows it to compensate for less than perfect alignment within the driving system while still delivering an even transfer of power.

The FM clutch was designed primarily for marine applications, mainly for use on diesel driven reduction gears. In addition to all the benefits of integral rim and tube construction, the marine clutch utilises ventilated friction shoes and as-moulded linings. This allows for controlled slippage during slow speed, forward and reverse manoeuvring, or common cyclical high speed operation, while still providing for consistent and smooth engagements under varying conditions. The FM element’s unique rim registration feature facilitates dual and triple element assemblies.

The DX clutch has a unique design arising from the need for a constricting clutch capable of handling heavy loads while withstanding repeated engagements and disengagements encountered in the oil drilling industry. The DX also features an actuating diaphragm which is isolated from the source of heat due to the unit’s open construction and utilisation of ventilated friction shoes, which promotes air flow across the length of the shoe. In addition the DX is composed of expendable component parts, meaning the element can be totally rebuilt.

Considered to be the workhorse of the drum clutches, the FKT was designed principally for high torque, high thermal capacity applications. The FKT offers the versatility of the FK while providing enhanced heat dissipation. The use of highly ventilated friction shoes promotes greater volumes of air flow across the length of the shoe, which reduces heat and ultimately extends the operating life of the actuator tube and clutch element. In addition, every single component is replaceable, meaning the FKT element can be totally rebuilt.

Gummi’s expanding clutches and brakes expand radially towards the inner diameter of the drum when pressurised. The outward expansion of the cord-reinforced neoprene tube thrusts the friction shoes against the inner diameter of the drum surface. Final tube pressure determines the element’s overall torque capacity.

The FKE is the expanding version of the FK. With a torque rating up to 2118 Nm, it is best suited in applications with light starting and stopping loads. The FKE is also commonly used as a slip clutch or tension brake within light horsepower and torque applications.

The FKR utilises a neoprene rubber facing that engages the drum directly. This interaction results in a friction force which permits a large amount of torque within a small package. The FKR also has the benefits of both a flexible and a disconnect coupling as long as there is no speed differential between the driving and driven components during engagement.

All Gummi products are designed, manufactured and sold under the SGS 9001:2000 international quality standard certified by SGS – United Kingdom certificate AR08/00873. Gummi also maintains ABS design certification.
