Pressure release valve with safety rating
Second Quarter 2005
Pneumatic systems & components
SMC Pneumatics has updated its VHS pressure isolation and release valve with a simplified design and additional safety features. The new features not only conform to the American OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rating, but also exceed some similar Australian Standard requirements.
Suitable for isolating main air supply lines in almost any application using compressed air, the valve has been designed to accommodate and encourage the use of a padlock to ensure the closed position is maintained during cleaning and maintenance procedures. This design feature is in accordance with OSHA rule 29, which requires that compliant energy sources be lockable as a means of preventing accidental start-ups.
A further safety requirement for OSHA compliance is a distinctive colour for the 'supply/exhaust' knob (red on the updated valve) and clear labelling of the valve's status. On the VHS valve, a yellow tag fitted within an easily viewed window enables the operator to verify the supply or exhaust status of the valve at any time.
The valve is made in four sizes and, depending on the model chosen, is available in six port sizes ranging from 1/8" to 1". VHS valves are capable of operating in pressures of 100 kPa to 1 MPa and temperatures of between -5 and 60°C. With a high exhaust capability, high flow range and the additional security features incorporated, SMC's upgraded VHS valve is suitable for most South African manufacturing applications.
