Power packs for apron feeder

Third Quarter 2005 Hydraulic systems & components

Krupp Materials Handling has demonstrated its satisfaction with previous power packs from Hytec by once again selecting Hytec to supply the hydraulic power pack and drive system for a new apron feeder, which will be installed into a diamond mine in the Limpopo Province.

The apron feeder is driven by a dual drive unit which comprises of a planetary gearbox and a bent axis hydraulic motor from the Bosch Rexroth product range, each weighing 3000 kg. The drive unit produces a combined output torque of 900 kNm. This is an impressive figure when considering it would take about 2250 sports cars to produce the equivalent torque. Installed electrical power is rated at 150 kW and 500 cc/rev hydraulic pumps from the Bosch Rexroth product range supply the drive unit with hydraulic oil. With this slow speed, high torque drive unit, smooth start up conditions can be achieved with a continuous torque over the whole speed range. Variable pump controllers allow the customer to vary the process requirements from the control station as required.

The primary apron feeder provides a crusher with diamond ore at a continuous rate. After the ore has been crushed into the required size, a secondary apron feeder pulls the material out of the crusher and feeds it onto a conveyor belt for further beneficiation.

As the previous system was also supplied by Hytec, the client was able to combine the two hydraulic systems into one, representing a significant saving and making integration of the hydraulic system into the control system much easier.

The hydraulic system was ordered in June 2004 for the installation in July 2005 at a total contract value of R2,4 m. The drive units and pumps were imported from Bosch Rexroth in Germany and the remaining parts were designed, manufactured and assembled in South Africa.

Hytec has the ability to supply drive systems for apron feeders and other drive applications to a combined maximum torque of 4 MNm, giving the company good reason to say that no drive application would be too small or too big. Full functional and performance tests are carried out before any systems are installed. The picture shows part of the R2,4 million hydraulic system installed for Krupp Materials Handling by Hytec.

SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
