Economical brushless DC motor drive

Third Quarter 2005 Electrical switching & drive systems & components

Maxon Motor's new DC 70/10 speed controller was specifically developed for the upper performance range where it can control electronically commutated DC motors of up to 700 W. The 4-quadrant controller needs no additional encoder, just the motor's own Hall sensor signals. This makes it a good value total drive solution that is suitable for speed and positioning tasks.

The DEC 70/10 (Digital EC Controller) is made for controlling high-powered brushless DC motors in areas such as mechanical engineering, industrial automation, conveyor drives and stirring apparatus. The three operating modes - speed control, voltage control with IxR compensation and current control - can easily be pre-selected per DIP-switch. This robust controller has an input voltage range of 10-70 V d.c and a 10 A current in continuous operation that can rise to 20 A intermittently; it is also highly flexible when combined with different types of power supplies and motors.

Speed of up to 80 000 RPM with a 2-pole motor is specified with an analog set value, but can also be fixed to two values using an internal potentiometer and digitally switched. Other potentiometers are used specifically to adjust current and speed restriction, set value ramp and control amplification. Integrated protective functions against over-current, over-voltage and thermal overload ensure smooth operation.

Complete with motor choke, the controller is fitted in compact aluminium casing that is smaller than a postcard. The DEC 70/10 has been well thought-out mechanically and is easy to handle thanks to a wide range of fastening options and separable screw terminals.
