More than 100 buses operated by Interstate Bus Lines have been fitted with an upgraded access system designed and installed by pneumatics specialist, Festo.
In addition to automatically opening and closing bus doors, the new system includes courtesy steps that are automatically lowered in order for easier entry and exit. Festo has also incorporated a safety feature that prevents the doors from opening when the vehicle is moving.
"We originally designed one prototype, using various Festo pneumatic pilot and integration valves, along with fittings and tubing contained in a compact control panel," reports Neville Schwulst from Festo East London. "Upon seeing the end result, IBL Body Shop manager, Pieter de Necker, decided to fit their entire fleet with the system. It should benefit them not only in terms of safety, but also contribute to the comfort of their customers, especially the elderly."
