Allen Cockfield of Artic, says that its Pyramid range of refrigeration air dryers takes air-drying into another dimension. The dryer consists of the normal air to air and air to Freon heat exchangers but incorporates a unique triple action filter, in the coldest section of the dryer.
Similar to the direct expansion dryer the warm contaminated air stream is taken through heat exchangers and reduces the compressed air temperature to a 3°C pressure dew point. This is achieved by forced cooling, using Freon gas. At the lowest temperature of 3°C the water and oil vapours condense into liquids. These are trapped and removed from the air stream by automatic condensate traps.
The reheat process is the same as the normal direct expansion air dryer. The real departure from many other designs is a high efficiency filter within the dryer. This functions as a moisture separator, particulate, and high efficiency coalescer in one element and filter casing. The casing contains two separate drain ports to remove the heavy solids and the coalesced oil.
A reliable timed auto drain valve removes these contaminants. Coalescing at the lowest temperature of 2°C where the concentration of liquids is the highest significantly enhances the oil removing capacity of the Pyramid dryer and the actual efficiency increases to 99,8%. The result is an air quality performance that is superior to that of combination of a filter and refrigerated dryer in series. This air dryer is almost capable of providing oil free air for a factory.
What this all means is that it is now possible for the food industry to obtain high quality compressed air with virtually no oil content from a less expensive, lubricated air compressor. It also means that less money is spent in servicing in-line filters; pressure drops are reduced, and downstream air quality is significantly improved. Clean and dry compressed air is essential in today’s modern operating environment. Without an air dryer and filter bank in line, the downtime created by condensate can be substantial. However, there are issues about air dryer selection and the impact of geographic location that need careful consideration prior to placing an order.
