Induction heater for bearings

Second quarter 2006 Other technologies

SKF, bearing technology specialist, manufactures and supplies a small induction heater suitable for heating bearings with a maximum weight of 40 kg as well as solid (electrically conductive) components with a maximum weight of 20 kg.

The new portable TIH 030m heater is capable of heating a 28 kg bearing in 20 minutes ('m20'). The induction coil, positioned outside the heater's housing, allows the bearing to be placed around the coil, resulting in considerable reduction of heating time, energy consumption and heating costs when compared to similar heaters.

The SKF TIH 030m heater is equipped with a temperature probe as well as temperature control, which is set at 110°C. The heater also features a time control for heating components other than bearings. The LED operating display and control panel are integrated in a remote control. The TIH 030m heater weighs 20,9 kg, including three yokes, which are supplied standard with the heater. Two arms fold out of the base to support the bearings during heating and allowing larger diameter bearings to be heated. The yokes can be stored inside the bearing support arms, reducing the risk of yoke damage or loss. The smaller yoke is used for heating smaller bearings at lower power levels. The TIH 030m is available in two voltage execution versions: 230 V/50-60 Hz and 100-110 V/50-60 Hz and is equipped with a power selection mode, which reduces the power by 50%.

The 'm20' concept represents the weight (kg) of the heaviest SRB 231 bearing which can be heated from 20 to 110°C in 20 minutes. This defines the heater's power output instead of its power input: kVA, eg, TIH 120-120 = 12,0 kVA. SKF TIH 030m induction heater is equipped with the following safety features:

* Circuit breaker with over current protection.

* Automatic current control.

* Automatic overheating protection.

* Probe control function.

* Temperature mode pre-set at 110°C, preventing bearing overheating.

The following features are also found in the SKF TIH 030 for ease of use:

* Start/stop key for starting and stopping the heating cycle with automatic demagnetisation.

* Power level selection function.

* Time control for monitoring the heating cycle.

* Thermometer mode for measuring the temperature while heating.

* Demagnetisation for always automatically demagnetising at the end of each heating cycle.

TIH 030m has an error guiding code that identifies problems and supplies solutions.

For ultimate performance and lifetime of the TIH 030m, the yoke and yoke supports must be protected against corrosion, damage and deformation. A perfect contact between the yoke supports and yokes is vital for optimal performance.
