Longer lifespan for hydraulic hose

First Quarter 2007 Hydraulic systems & components

Genflex Hydraulics has introduced Minetough hydraulic hose to the South African market. Currently on trial with the mines, Minetough has already proven it has a greater lifespan, and that hose assemblies are lasting considerably longer.

"Sourced via Germany and China, one of the important elements to Minetough is that the outer cover can be manufactured in three different thicknesses. The thinnest of covering is the hose currently undergoing tests, but Genflex has received enquiries for a slightly thicker hose cover also for use underground," said David Michelle, director, Genflex Hydraulics.

"Obviously we are monitoring the pressure and burst points of this new hose very carefully. It is a difficult exercise due to the hose needing to be brought to the surface for inspection, when the actual working environment is underground.

"We have developed a hose repair service using a testing system. After washing out the hose the sludge and foreign particles are removed - the visual leaks are repaired and the hose is then tested on the new pressure testing rig at 400 bar pressure for a period of one minute. Should further leaks be detected they can be repaired. The hose is then date stamped and can be returned underground for further service.

"We have found that by using this system, hose life - especially underground on the water jetting systems and hydro power systems - can be extended dramatically.

"It is essential that the hose be completely clean, before re-use. It is also essential that the hose is tested and inspected correctly, and Genflex offers guidance in this area.

"Minetough has tested extremely well in the laboratory, and it is a very price-competitive product. Genflex is aware that the mining sector in particular requires a reliable and effective hydraulic hose, and we believe Minetough will pass on-site tests with flying colours. It is our objective to continue to improve the life expectancy of hose, but with every new technology there are minor teething problems at first, which take a little time to resolve," Michelle said.

The Minetough trademark registration is currently pending.
