Hytec Engineering repairs largest cylinders to date

First Quarter 2007 Other technologies

Hytec Engineering, through Hytec Mozambique, has recently repaired the largest cylinders serviced by the company to date. With a bore of 600 mm and a stroke of 9,5 m each, the two 15 t cylinders were installed at a dam 370 km North West of Maputo at the town of Massingir 25 years ago. Corrosion has since damaged the internal components of the cylinders, as well as the supply pipe work. Hytec Mozambique is also repairing the power packs. The dam is now being rehabilitated under the auspices of a French company as part of a World Bank-financed project.

From Hytec Engineering's side, the project was managed by Raymond Els, who realised from the outset that it would take a major engineering feat to strip the cylinders out of the dam wall. Once this was accomplished, the cylinders were transported to Hytec Engineering's workshop, where a 5 t and 10 t crane assisted in the unloading and positioning of the large units.

Top management executives from the French project management house examined the first cylinder which has been stripped and were very impressed with Hytec Engineering's new factory and facilities.

Hytec has also received the order to replace the pipe work with stainless steel and assist with the commissioning of the cylinders and power packs, once the cylinders are reinstalled.

Construction on state-of-the-art premises had to be fast-tracked for completion late last year to accommodate growing demand flowing from the company's on-going expansion into Africa.

Capable of the complete design, manufacture and repair of hydraulic cylinders, the company has been particularly successful in recent years in breaking into the highly competitive mining and earth moving markets. Hytec Engineering's new premises situated in Spartan, Johannesburg, houses a dedicated repair facility under one roof, with services ranging from specialist assessment and quotation to chroming, grinding, honing, machining, testing and assembly. This not only serves to further shorten lead times, but should see improved process control, ensuring that the company continues to deliver industry leading quality repairs.

Hytec Engineering has vast experience in mining and earthmoving repairs with the emphasis on 'Repair to Standard Tolerance' solutions. The company has representation in every southern African country, including Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, and is also represented as far afield as Ghana West Africa.

As one of the few cylinder manufacturers and repairers in SA to offer full design capabilities, incorporating the latest CAD software, the company has the ability to provide a broad range of designs. Hytec Engineering only manufactures cylinders according to drawings and offers a reverse engineering service where appropriate.

By importing its own raw materials comprising honed and unhoned tubing, chromed shafting and seal kits, Hytec Engineering offers faster lead times and competitive pricing.
