Somewhere north of Brits and a little before Thabzimbi is some of South Africa's most fertile farmland. Cliff Peake and his son Donald have chosen this ideal area to set up a workshop for the maintenance of specialised farming machinery. Driving on a well-kept dirt road through fields of soya beans, one soon forgets the hustle and bustle of the CBD of Jo'burg. The workshop is spacious, neat and tidy, with six machines in the process of being maintained, one soon realises that father and son do what they enjoy most, working with and for the farming community on harvesting machines of many shapes and sizes. Cliff realised the need for a crop spraying/de-tasselling machine, and set about designing and building his own machine. Cliff chose Black Bruin hydraulic wheel motors for their compact and proven reliability. The BBC 02 has a capacity of 705 through 1018 cc, with failsafe brake, 2-speed shift on the go, and free wheeling facility. SUN cartridge valves in a purpose designed and made manifold control the forward and reverse motion with loop flushing, together with other functions such as oil flow dividing of the four Black Bruin motors. Bird life is prolific and walking toward the bird hide built by Donald, we stop at the screech of a fish eagle overhead. This is how Donald and his mother Elsje spend most of their leisure hours. Reluctantly we leave this tranquility and let the family get on with their idyllic way of life.

Those working with hydraulic or pneumatic systems know that keeping your machinery running at peak performance balances productivity and cost. As systems age, they often become less efficient, requiring more energy and more frequent repairs. The good news is that you don’t always need to invest in an entirely new machine to solve these problems.
