Solenoid R&D reaps rewards

Third Quarter 2007 Pneumatic systems & components

Industrial applications requiring precise fluid control have a new option with SMC's launch of the Series VXZ range of zero differential pressure, pilot operated, 2-port solenoid valves. Following a design review of their existing VX solenoid valve range, SMC's R&D engineers were tasked to develop a model with improved operational performance and full interchangeability with the current VX Series. The outcome is this new series, designed for air, water, oil or vacuum applications. By improving the magnetic characteristics of the solenoid valve, the power consumption has fallen from 8 W to 7 W and 11,5 W to 10,5 W respectively. Additionally, the valve's life expectancy has also been increased by up to two times, due to a new noise reducing, stopper design in which the metal components of the armature assembly cannot impact with the tube assembly during operation. Further constructional improvements are found in the use of a higher grade of magnetic stainless steel in the armature to provide better corrosion resistance and enhanced IP65 closure protection - dust tight and jet proof. Ease of maintenance has also been considered in the new range and their threaded nut construction allows easy access for inspection and cleaning and simple solenoid coil replacement.
