Emergency hydraulic buffers save lives

Fourth Quarter 2007 Hydraulic systems & components

Specialised manufacturer of energy absorption products, ITT Enidine offers a wide range of emergency shock absorbers to prevent fatal accidents. The company's Heavy Duty and Heavy Industry buffers provide safe deceleration under the harshest conditions: from emergency lift applications to crane over-run applications.

If visitors to the Eiffel Tower in France were to look carefully they would find four HI-100 model buffers fitted on each floor as emergency stoppers. These shock absorbers are mounted to prevent fatality in case of malfunction causing the lift to free fall, allowing thousands of tourists to safely visit this landmark daily.

The HI Series of buffers features a nitrogen-charged return system that allows for soft deceleration and positive return in a maintenance-free package. The oversize bore area results in optimal energy absorption capabilities and increased internal safety factors. These buffers are engineered to meet OSHA, AISE, CMMA and other safety specifications such as DIN and FEM.

ITT Enidine also supplies the E-Shock, a smaller shock absorber that complements the Heavy Duty range. The E-shock can be used in many emergency applications of a smaller nature to provide a controlled, predictable deceleration consistently over time and thus extending machine life.

These adjustable and non-adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers with emergency stopping energy absorption capabilities are carefully engineered to also accommodate a wide range of energy conditions. They offer flexibility in both size and energy capacity to fulfil a wide range of requirements.

While South Africa may not have the Eiffel Tower, these vital components play a major role in protecting thousands of lives in countless unseen applications every day.

How to protect against water hammer
SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
