Fluid management: extending the life of hydraulic systems

Second Quarter 2008 Hydraulic systems & components

Victor Price of Turnkey Hydraulics says that it is important that customers are kept well informed with the latest technology including service requirements and that correctly designed systems supported by the right tools can result in year-on-year savings for clients.

He adds that many studies have shown that hydraulic systems operating free from contaminants result in longer life of both components and fluids and that fluid management systems are an essential part of reliable hydraulic systems.

One of Turnkey Hydraulics' principals is Internormen, a well-established designer and manufacturer of products in the field of filter technology for hydraulic and lubrication systems. As well as filter technology, the company's product range includes fluid management systems, contamination control equipment, analysis systems and associated software solutions.

Internormen has products which enable users to monitor contamination in hydraulic systems on-line, allowing for proactive rather than reactive maintenance. By keeping an eye on the health of the hydraulic fluid, measures can be taken long before failures occur. This contributes to reduced downtime and lowered operating costs.

Particle contamination

The metal particle sensor MPS 01 connected to the MPM 01 monitor operates using an inductive measuring technique for direct measurement, detecting and counting metal particles greater than 200 microns.

The CCM 01 is a particle counter which uses a laser sensor to detect particles found in hydraulic and lubricating fluids. The unit determines contamination classes according to ISO 4406:99 and can display contamination classes according to NAS 1638.

The units can easily be installed on new or existing equipment and both monitors have CAN interfaces for incorporation into fully automated systems.

Water contamination

The WSPS 03 sensor coupled to a WSTM 01 display unit facilitates the reliable online measurement of water saturation in hydraulic and lubricating fluids. Water contamination results can be displayed in either saturation level or theoretical ppm. The unit also monitors fluid temperature.

Where water contamination in multiple hydraulic systems needs to be monitored cost effectively the MSS 01 can be used to connect up to eight separate WSPS 03 sensors to a single WSTM 01 display unit.

The WSTM 01 is also equipped with a CAN interface for automation system integration.
