Wave filter offers significant benefits

Second Quarter 2008 Hydraulic systems & components

Filtration, separation and purification company, Pall Corporation, has a range of filters that plays a vital role in reducing piston pump and proportional valve failures in many applications.

The Pall Ultipleat SRT (stress resistant technology) filters offer contamination control and protection of components like pumps and valves and are used in hydraulic and lube filter elements for industries that include aluminium extrusion presses and continuous casting processes.

The filter technology combines high performance filtration media in an innovative filter element design. The wave shaped filter media pleat geometry (see Figure 1) allows the maximum filter area to be packed into the filter element to provide a smaller, more economical package for improved contamination control. The design also ensures uniform flow distribution through the filter element and protects against pleat collapse and bunching. The technology provides increased resistance to operating system stresses like variable flow and pressure, to provide improved fluid cleanliness, thus contributing to enhanced reliability of hydraulic equipment.

Figure 1. Pall has determined that a geometric involute shape, more simply described as a wave shape, yields maximum pleat area

Ultipleat SRT filters improve fluid cleanliness and extend the lives of pumps and valves. Increased reliability of the hydraulic system and better contamination control means fewer pump failures. Machine reliability is improved and downtime is significantly reduced.

In continuous casting processes where systems are affected by variable displacement pump failures, recurrent proportional valve blockage and high fluid contamination levels, the filters are installed on the pressure line and on off-line kidney loop circuits.

How to protect against water hammer
SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
