Piston pump design cuts noise

Second Quarter 2008 Hydraulic systems & components

Taking cognisance of the increasing emphasis and legislation on environmental noise reduction, Rexroth has designed the A10VSO axial piston pump with the reduction of noise formation in mind.

Hytec operations manager, Freddie Kuhn, explains that the causes of noise include structure-borne sound and air-borne sound. "By considering both causes, Rexroth has reduced airborne noise level in this pump series by 3 dB(A) and also realised a considerable reduction in structure-borne sound."

In many applications it may be necessary to install more than one pump depending on the system functions. If this is the case, it is easy to mount the additional pumps onto the through drive of the first pump without the need of an extra prime mover.

"The universal through drive enables cost savings with respect to storing several different versions of the primary pump and also offers a high level of flexibility when needing to adapt to changing requirements," Kuhn adds.

A pre-compression volume (PVC) can be integrated as an option to reduce pulsation by up to 50%. This reduces the fluid-borne noise level considerably, in particular where the power unit is installed some distance away from the machine.

The A10VSO series 32 features:

* Displacement from 71 to 180 cm³.

* Nominal pressure up to 280 bar.

* Permissible peak pressure 350 bar.

* Broad controller range.

SA Gauge Editor's Choice Hydraulic systems & components
Water hammer is a high-pressure surge or wave created by the kinetic energy of moving fluid when it is rapidly forced to stop or change direction, altering the liquid’s velocity. The progression of the water hammer shockwave needs to be detained and slowed before reaching the instrument sensor. SA Gauge manufactures several such devices in order to achieve this.
