The Pyramid refrigeration air dryer is constructed with stainless steel air-to-air and air-to-Freon heat exchangers and incorporates a high efficiency water separator and a coalescing filter in the coldest section of the dryer.
Principle of operation of the Pyramid refrigeration air dryer
Saturated compressed air is passed through heat exchangers, which reduce the compressed air temperature to 3°C using cold Freon. At this temperature the water and oil vapours condense from a vapour into a liquid. This oily liquid can then be drained from the dryer to a waste handling plant.
The departure from other designs is the use of the high efficiency coalescing filter within the cold core of the dryer. Coalescing oils and liquids at a temperature of 3°C, where the concentration of liquids is the highest, significantly improves the oil removing capacity of this dryer to a level of 99,8%.
A normal air dryer is fitted with external coalescing filters that are designed to remove oils and solids at a design temperature of 20°C. In reality these filters are often operating at temperatures up to 45°C. At these temperatures the filter elements do not achieve the designed performance and oil removal characteristics fall below design parameters. The hydrocarbon removal efficiency rate at 38°C is typically around 76%.
In the refrigeration air dryer contaminants are trapped and removed from the air stream by intelligent, level controlled capacitance type moisture traps. These units only exhaust liquids, and prevent expensive compressed air wastage.
The result is an air quality that is vastly superior to that of a combination of a filter and refrigerated dryer in series. With optional activated carbon filters fitted after the air dryer the Pyramid air dryer is capable of providing almost oil-free air from a lubricated source compressor. This gives operators a compressor purchase and secondary maintenance costs that are greatly reduced.

Little consideration is generally given to two-port valves because they are often perceived as simple devices that only open and close to control downstream fluid supply. Although this is mechanically true, choosing the optimal two-port valve for your application can make a big difference, saving space, weight and energy consumption.
