Hydraulics for a drill rig

3rd Quarter 2010 Hydraulic systems & components

Commercial Shearing specialises in the manufacture and assembly of hydraulic systems, gear pumps, piston pumps, control valves and motors for mobile applications such as earthmoving and mining machinery. Major local OEM clients include companies involved in the manufacture of mining machinery, and systems are also supplied directly to end users as replacement parts.

The company recently supplied a full hydraulic system for a track-mounted exploration drill rig manufactured by Drill Strata. The drill rig was capable of drilling a 152 mm hole to a depth of 450 metres. It was powered by a 187 kW diesel engine driving a mechanical splitter gear box fitted with five hydraulic pumps.

Pumps

Two of these were hydrostatic piston pumps with a maximum pressure of 310 bar, each driving a piston motor for the track drives.

The other three pumps controlled the drilling functions, namely mast raise and lower, drill head feed, and drill rotation. They were operated by the water pump, winch, stabiliser jack, drill rod carousel and air conditioning pump. The pumps were multistage gear pumps with a maximum pressure of 240 bar.

Control valves

The system required a variety of valves. Two remote pilot control valves operated the hydrostatic piston pumps. These controlled the forward and reverse functions and the machine tramming speed. A 9-bank hand control valve with a maximum flow of

90 l/min was set at a pressure of 190 bar. Two 6-bank hand control valves with a maximum flow of 90 l/min were set at a pressure of 190 bar. Another two single-bank hand control valves with a maximum flow of 250 l/min were set at a pressure of 190 bar. Other control valves supplied were the over centre, flow control and hold back valves.

Filters

Three return line filters protected the gear pumps. These were mounted on the tank. The piston pumps were protected by two suction filters.

Other components were the reduction gear box, brake and hydraulic motor for the winch. All functions could be operated from inside the cab by a single operator.
