Commercial Shearing's four-pump assembly

4th Quarter 2010 Hydraulic systems & components

Commercial Shearing recently supplied a pump assembly for fitment to a compost turner for a client which manufactures agricultural machinery. It consisted of a fixed displacement gear pump, two closed loop variable displacement piston pumps and a further fixed displacement gear pump, all fitted on a single drive shaft. This configuration met all the client’s requirements without the need for an expensive splitter gearbox.

The system was driven by a 120 kW diesel engine at 1500 rpm.

The fixed displacement gear pump in the first section drove two hydraulic motors mounted onto a mixing drum with an output speed of 280 rpm and a torque of 3900 Nm. It had a displacement of 132 cc/rev and a maximum working pressure of 22 MPa.

For the wheel drive gearboxes the two closed loop variable displacement piston pumps in the next two sections each had a displacement of 7,4 cc/rev and a maximum working pressure of 30 MPa. They drove four hydraulic motors with a displacement of 32 cc/rev, two in each section.

In the fourth section another fixed displacement gear pump operated two lift cylinders to adjust the height of the drum. It had a displacement of 10 cc/rev and a maximum working pressure of 27 MPa.

Commercial Shearing individually tests all of its products before shipping and has a comprehensive pump and motor test area. The unit was assembled from parts imported from the USA, Germany and Italy and was tested at the company’s Jet Park workshop before delivery.

Besides custom manufacture, Commercial Shearing offers a standard range of products that are covered in its extensive catalogue. Commercial Shearing’s pumps work well on most good hydraulic fluids as well as synthetic and fire resistant fluids. The company claims to have the largest range of hydraulic gear pumps in South Africa for use in mobile applications.
