The HKS Group in Germany has launched a new generation of hydraulic rotary actuators. The XtraTilt Power Actuator offers cylinder-free tilt technology for building machines. Compared to cylinder-supported systems this powerful actuator has a larger tilt angle and is more compact.
The modular structure of the system makes it ideal for retrofitting. Construction machinery can be assembled in line with individual requirements. Starting with the basic rotary actuator for shovel tilt movements (XtraTilt), the rotation aggregate (RotoBox) can be added, and this can be taken through to a combined tilt and rotation solution with fixed arm connection (TiltRotator). The system is compatible with all established quick-changer systems for machines up to 100 tons. All the modular units can be exchanged within minutes.
Furthermore, the strong, well-sealed housing provides excellent protection from dust, dirt, and moisture. Its integrated self-lubrication renders it maintenance- and wear-free. There can be no damage to tilt cylinders and failure of connecting parts such as fastening bolts and bushes, because the Power Actuator has none of these. The robust design of the individual components, made from high strength, surface hardened materials, allows rotation almost without play, even after prolonged operation.
Power meets precision
Hydraulic rotary actuators can generate a very high torque in a small space. The swivel mechanism is based on the coarse thread principle. When pressure is applied, the linear movement of the piston is converted by multiple helical gears to a powerful rotary movement by multiple opposing coarse threads on the housing, piston and shaft. For rotary-lift combinations a linear movement is added. If the hydraulic circuit is closed by the adjusting valve, which at the same time prevents movement of the piston and shaft, the attached implement remains in its working position.
The XtraTilt combines enormous power with precision which lies at the limit of what is currently possible. The tolerance in the angle of rotation is less than 10 angular minutes. It also enhances the building machine’s efficiency and productivity. For instance, the tilt angle of the excavator bucket is increased by 40% compared to conventional solutions. In addition, the cylinder-free construction is around 50% narrower than with cylinder-supported technology, making it possible for narrow backhoes to be tilted.
The actuator is ideal for carrier implements with an operational weight up to 100 tons. With its simple screw connection it can be installed quite conveniently without major expenditure. The decisive factor is the stability of the carrier implement.
Worlds biggest
The world’s biggest excavator shovel adjustment XtraTilt BVC 420 has also recently been launched. The gigantic actuator alone weighs 1403 kg and is suitable for hydraulic excavators up to 70 tons. With a 100° tilt angle, the holding torque performance of 165 000 Nm makes this actuator the largest of its class worldwide. Consisting of only four component parts, it can be maintained without difficulty during a customer’s own operations.

Those working with hydraulic or pneumatic systems know that keeping your machinery running at peak performance balances productivity and cost. As systems age, they often become less efficient, requiring more energy and more frequent repairs. The good news is that you don’t always need to invest in an entirely new machine to solve these problems.
