Hytec's heavy vehicle simulator

4th Quarter 2010 Hydraulic systems & components

Hytec recently supplied Bosch Rexroth components to Dynatest Consulting for the construction of a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) in India.

The contract, valued at R2,5 million, involved the design and manufacture of power units and the installation and commissioning of the Bosch Rexroth components.

The carriage system, with installed power of 18,5 kW, consisted of a carriage pump; a unique hydraulic cylinder fitted with a directional control valve with close loop control; accumulators; side filtration and cooling pumps; and a main system with installed power of 110 kW consisting of close loop pump, side shift cylinders and hydraulic motors.

“The HVS is a mobile machine used to subject road surfaces to accelerated trafficking,” explains André Lindeque, engineering manager, Hytec. “The machine can be used to simulate 20 years of road surface deterioration in as short a time as three months."

Tough conditions

The HVS is hydraulically operated to run a test carriage continuously backwards and forwards along a six metre section of test road surface. The test carriage can be hydraulically loaded to exert pressures from 30 kN, up to 200 kN on the road surface.

For this particular application, the client stipulated that the components would be required to accelerate a mass of two tons, with a maximum wheel load of 20 tons on the road surface, to a speed of 13 km an hour. This needed to be accomplished in a distance of just one and a half metres. The test carriage was then required to travel a distance of six metres before stopping the moving mass in a distance of one and a half metres,” says Lindeque.

“This HVS also requires 10 tons of wheel load force to perform a sinusoidal curve of 85 Hz on the constant speed section of the test surface. In addition, the travel speed of the test carriage needs to be adjustable. As a result of the stipulated operating conditions we selected Bosch Rexroth products to be used throughout the project,” he explains.
