Lower electricity and air compression costs

4th Quarter 2012 Pneumatic systems & components

Bosch Rexroth’s new generation of efficiency-driven components is set to drastically lower electricity and air compression expenses for pneumatic equipment operators.

One breakthrough is the energy optimised crust breaker – used by smelters to break through solidified aluminium crusts. “Unlike standard crust breakers, the Bosch Rexroth breaker is able to detect exactly when its chisel experiences maximum resistance against the crust,” says Erica Bennion, divisional manager at Tectra. “This allows the PLC to actuate the cylinder at precisely the critical pressure point and after breaking through to immediately retract.”

The result is that the crust breaker’s cylinder uses significantly less air than cylinders placed under maximum pressure throughout the breaking process. This has a substantial effect on energy usage, as well as wear and tear on the cylinder’s chisel and seals. The breaker is available in two versions: basic and advanced. While the basic version includes all crust sensing technology and produces air savings of up to 70%, the advanced version has options such as bath, metal and temperature measurement.

“The idea is to identify and implement savings for our customers by incorporating Bosch Rexroth distance and flow sensors and by implementing a uniquely developed program to control the system through the PLC,” explains Jaco de Beer, Tectra Automation pneumatics product specialist and developer of this technology. “This will help to optimise the cylinder’s air usage and bring to the market a highly efficient technology that is versatile enough for a range of applications,” he concludes.
