4th Quarter 2014 Hydraulic systems & components

Powerworks, manufacturer of Powerstart hydraulic starting systems and Jetstream turbine air starters, is yet again at the forefront of non-electric starting with the successful development of the first pre-engaged hydraulic starter motor to be fully Atex certified. Hydraulic starting systems have always been the number one choice for hazardous and explosive areas but until now there has not been a hydraulic starter motor which has complied with stringent European norms and the Atex directive.

The Powerstart pre-engaged hydraulic starter is the first third-party Atex certified starter motor compliant with EN13463-5, EN13463-1, EN13463-8, EN1834-1 and EN1834-2 norms. These norms govern the use of non-electrical equipment and internal combustion engines in potentially explosive atmospheres. When it comes to hazardous areas, electric starting is often a cumbersome option. The starters tend to be very large and bulky, making fitting difficult. Because they need to be totally enclosed, they tend to overheat and fail when cranked for long periods. The costs of the associated equipment can easily outweigh the benefits. Large batteries are needed and these have to be certified and housed in flameproof enclosures. An installation also needs a larger than normal alternator to charge these batteries and a number of switchgear and electrical isolators, all of which need to be flameproofed.

The new starters have been well received by international OEM manufacturers in South Africa, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Italy and the Czech Republic, with orders pouring in and production running at full speed in order to keep up with increasing demand.
