Locally built air dryers for hospitals

Fourth Quarter 2020 Pneumatic systems & components

Artic Driers recently partnered with an NGO (non-governmental organisation) called Save-P to develop a locally designed compressed air dryer and filter bank providing breathing-quality air for hospitals and clinics during Covid-19. These units feed a mixture of clean, dry compressed air and oxygen to patients via a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) regulator unit.

Artic Driers CEO, Allen Cockfield, said that the compressed air dryer and filter casings were designed to handle up to 280 patients at a time. The design took three weeks to complete and was given pro bono to Save P by Artic as a community initiative. The concept was for these units to be built at cost and funded by the government. The Save P project has produced hundreds of CPAP units and they are now in use at hospitals and clinics countrywide.

Meanwhile, through a number of specialised sub-contractors, Artic has built at least 13 low dewpoint air drying units, all for Covid-19 use. These have varied from units with a capacity as high as 23 m3/min to as low as 3 m3/min. One of the recipients is the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, which now has one of the large units for its Covid-19 emergency ward extensions currently nearing completion.

“The financial ramifications of Covid-19 were underestimated by many companies, including my own,” concludes Cockfield. “Artic’s in-house production teams have only just surfaced again after months of building dryer assemblies for our specialised hospital supplier partners.”
