SAFPA’s new president, Dustin Pereira, is back for another term. Motion Control’s editor caught up with him to find out about his plans. Dustin says that since his last stint, life has shifted. He’s relocated from Johannesburg to the coast, moved from a full‑time position at Hydac into consulting, and launched his own company, Fluid Power Projects, based in Rustenburg. Balancing his business, family and SAFPA isn’t easy, but he’s determined to keep things moving. “SAFPA is tricky, there’s no full‑time staff, just volunteers, and everyone’s busy. We have to be realistic about what we can achieve,” he says.
Instead of chasing big, unfocused projects, SAFPA is setting achievable goals for the future. One of these is training on ISO and SANS standards, supporting members with practical awareness campaigns rather than specialised training that competes with its members. Past training programmes sometimes stalled due to changing requirements from MerSETA. The aim here is to add value in areas where SAFPA can make an impact.
Another focus area is creating awareness of the changes in the regulations relating to compliance. Recent changes in the built environment legislation mean any company doing engineering work, including in fluid power, must have professionals on staff who are appropriately registered with ECSA. “Hydraulic engineering is an engineering discipline,” he says. “This affects a wide range of roles. Are you properly qualified? If not, you could have a problem. We can’t run away from these changes. SAFPA should be leading awareness and helping members adapt.” SAFPA will continue to host talks by ECSA, helping members to stay compliant and keep their CPD points up to date.
SAFPA will also be working closely with SABS on SANS 347 and Pressure Equipment Regulations. Current language around hydraulic pressure vessels is unclear, leading to different interpretations. “It should be black and white,” he says. “Clarity will save the industry time, risk and cost.”
Technical work aside, SAFPA’s social calendar remains strong. “The golf, cycling and soccer days are always a hit. It’s a great way to connect, share ideas and keep the industry talking,” he adds. With a practical plan in place focusing on achievable wins, compliance support and clearer standards, SAFPA is set for a year of steady, meaningful progress.
