SAFPA: From the President’s desk

Third Quarter 2026 SAFPA

Dustin Pereira, president of SAFPA.

Dear Readers,

I was reviewing my last President’s Letter and its reference to the conflict in the Middle East; not much has changed. It seems that peace talks are still on the cards, but who knows for how long? It is a very fractious situation, and things can change overnight.

The conflict is positively affecting mineral prices, and the effects can be seen in various mothballed mines coming back online and new projects kicking off in mineral beneficiation and processing. In a way, this may therefore have a positive trickle-down effect on the fluid power industry.

I’m pleased to say that SAFPA membership is steady. We have a few new members joining from month to month, and currently have 23 individual members, 43 corporate members, 14 country members and one subsidiary member. Moreover, the association remains financially sound.

The council is driving various initiatives, and you can keep abreast of these initiatives on our LinkedIn, Facebook and X accounts. Further communication is sent out via email. If you are not receiving these emails, please contact our secretariat at [email protected] to ensure you are added to the database.

Upcoming events

We are currently arranging a symposium for 21 October 2026 this year. Please look out for publications about the content, rates and booking details for this event to reserve a seat.

The symposium aims to provide employees of member companies with an opportunity to be exposed to specific engineering content from industry experts, allowing for further skills development, which is always important. Please watch this space for notifications about the symposium. It promises to be a good opportunity for members to get together, network and learn more about the market we are all part of.

Other events on the horizon include:

• The mountain bike ride on 20 November 2026 at the Prime View Circuit.

• Our annual Golf Day on 19 August 2026 at the Bryanston Country Club.

• A Soccer Day on 26 September 2026 at the Boksburg Stadium.

We hope to have good attendance at these events, which will provide a welcome break from the day-to-day stresses we all face, as well as an opportunity to socialise within the industry.

New member for improved organisation

In an effort to add value to SAFPA members, the council discussed, at its meeting held 7 August 2026, the onboarding of a retiree from the industry. Ideally, this individual will have experience within the SAFPA council to help spearhead various projects and initiatives, and to provide general assistance to council members to ensure the timely execution of council business, such as the items mentioned above.

As council membership is voluntary, each individual’s input is subject to available time and resources. All the members are currently employed full-time, so it is difficult to focus on executing various initiatives because their primary commitments are to their full-time employment. A council assistant can therefore help drive initiatives to completion and will be compensated for their time and contribution.

The outcome of this council meeting will be tabled and, by the time this article is published, will be available for members to review.

Regards,

Dustin Pereira
