Multifunctional maintenance instrument

First Quarter 2007 Other technologies

The MX Series vibration analysis tool from SKF is said to redefine traditional approaches to vibration analysis and simplifies industrial maintenance, servicing and inspection techniques. It also offers new possibilities for manufacturers of rotating and reciprocating machinery. The latest handheld computing technology has been combined with a flexible range of analysis modules to create a multifunctional tool for use by anyone, irrespective of experience levels.

The MX Series was created to provide a simple easy-to-use instrument for a wide range of applications and is, in effect, several instruments combined in a single, rugged, handheld device, offering the flexibility to choose from a range of different testing and analysis applications.

Modular tools include:

* A conformance check module, to assess machinery health in accordance with industrial standards (ISO, BS, API, etc,) or to allow users to define their own standards.

* An easy-to-use FFT spectrum analyser with on-screen phase vector readout.

* A standalone balancer (static and dynamic couple, single or dual plane).

* A bump test for determining resonance.

* A digital signal recorder.

The modular approach of the MX Series is the key to the Series' flexibility and users can create an instrument tailored to their exact requirements by selecting the specific applications. Further modules can be installed as and when needs change, ensuring a viable upgrade path without the need to invest in new hardware.

Several unique features ensure ease of use:

* On-screen help and step-by-step instructions.

* Display images of actual machinery or transducer locations.

* Hard copy printout to a field portable printer.

* PC-based advanced reporting and analysis module.

An advanced mobile computer with the latest Intel 400 MHz Xscale processor lies at the heart of the MX Series resulting in a powerful instrument capable of taking fast high-resolution measurements. The instruments have large colour displays readable in most lighting conditions and Microsoft's Windows CE.net operating system and USB communications provide seamless connectivity into the PC environment.

The devices have large 64-megabyte internal memory plus the choice of digital storage options to ensure access to ample data storage. SKF understands the need for rugged instruments able to withstand the daily knocks and abuse associated with industrial environments and the MX Series embodies rugged design philosophy with a 1,98 m drop test rating and IP 65 ceiling to protect against dust and water ingress.
