SKEFKO Pietermaritzburg, the first of three regions to be established as SKF South Africa's BBBEE venture, assumed responsibility for servicing the entire KZN region in August 2006. Towards the end of last year PG Bison, which has been a valued customer for the past five years, requested SKEFKO to investigate the reasons for premature failure of linear blocks. "These failures were leading to high incidences of downtime and were proving extremely costly for the customer," says SKEFKO director, Ahmed Ismail. "After extensive inspection, our SKF engineering team presented a comprehensive report which highlighted the root causes of the failures and suggested the best practical solution."
The inspection revealed that poor lubrication and misalignment were the key contributing factors to the failures and SKF's solution included the supply and installation of a range of THK linear drives and SKF lubrication systems.
The solution for PG Bison's Anthon Trim Saw included linear blocks and two off 6,3 metre rails. Lubrication requirements were taken care of by SKF's Oil Droplet System. SKF engineers provided all-round support, from product supply to installation of the lubrication system as well as guidance with the assembly of the THK rails and blocks. SKF reliability technicians were also on site for alignment of the rails.
The order was placed in October 2006 with delivery and installation in December 2006. Now that the system is fully automated, eliminating the need for manual lubrication, downtime on this equipment is a thing of the past for PG Bison's Pietermaritzburg Board Mill.
