1000 mm laser displacement sensor

Fourth Quarter 2007 Other technologies

The Keyence model LK-G CCD laser displacement sensor has a measuring distance of 250 to 1000 mm. The newly-developed optical system supports both high precision and long-range measurement. Various sensor heads and controllers are available to suit the requirements of specific applications.

Accurate reception of reflected light from a long distance is the key to high precision. Keyence has adopted a large-aperture Ernostar lens, reviewed the cabinet design, and developed a delta cut technology that reduces reflection on a filter glass surface. This has achieved a sensitivity that is 10 times better than the conventional models.

In order to accurately process signals at a sampling speed of 50 kHz - up to 50 times that of conventional models - the new model incorporates a linearised CCD (Li-CCD) sensor coupled to a dedicated DSP. Since a CCD has digital output characteristics for each pixel, the errors caused by gradual outputs generated at the edge of pixels were the barrier to higher accuracy. To overcome this effect, Keyence developed an Li-CCD that outputs the position of reflected light in a pixel, achieving excellent accuracy that is two times higher than conventional models.

Measurement of all types of workpieces, including transparent, black rubber, mirror-surfaced and metal targets, can be performed with high accuracy. The ABLE (active balanced laser control engine) senses the surface of a target to adjust the laser light intensity to the optimum level. It intelligently controls laser emission time, laser power, and gain (CCD amplification factor). This enables displacement measurement repeatability of 2 μm with a linearity of ±0,02% of full scale.

For integration with other devices, controllers are available with five types of I/O: USB, RS232, binary I/O, discrete I/O (at up to 50 kHz output frequency) and analogue I/O.
