The contract for the supply of hydraulic systems, for what is believed to be one of the largest iron ore stacker reclaimers in southern Africa, has been awarded to Hytec Johannesburg by Sandvik Materials Handling.
The award of this contract, valued at R1,5 million, reaffirms Hytec’s ability to deliver reliable components and solutions to major materials handling applications in sub-Saharan Africa.
“This is by far the biggest stacker reclaimer that we have worked on. The machine will be used in the Saldanha Bay port, by Sandvik’s end client, the National Ports Authority, to stockpile and reclaim iron ore for onward shipment,” enthuses Klaus Marggraff, systems sales manager, Hytec.
The Saldanha stacker reclaimer is capable of handling 10 000 tons of material an hour and features a monumental boom length of 60 m. The entire hydraulic system is powered by two 132 kW electric motors, which drive two electronically controlled hydraulic pumps.
All of the hydraulic systems required for the stacker reclaimer project were designed and manufactured in Hytec’s Johannesburg plant and transported to Saldanha Bay. The systems comprise complete hydraulic solutions for the luffing system, the hydraulics for the tripper car, the bypass chute and the stacking and reclaiming system. The company was also responsible for the installation of the hydraulic piping.
“The most challenging aspect of this project was to ensure the smooth control of the luffing system. With such a large scale machine, any shudder or vibration will be transmitted down the length of the boom resulting in an inefficient and unsafe piece of equipment. The Hytec team met the challenge head on and made use of its extensive industry experience to carefully select the correct hydraulic components for the job. We supplied a primary control for the hydraulic pump which is responsible for the acceleration and deceleration of the boom. The solution that we provided not only solves the original challenge, but has also proved to be highly energy efficient,” says Marggraff.
To achieve the minimum projected operational life of 10 years, Bosch Rexroth hydraulic components were used throughout the hydraulic systems on the stacker reclaimer. These components are internationally recognised for their durability, reliability and quality.

Those working with hydraulic or pneumatic systems know that keeping your machinery running at peak performance balances productivity and cost. As systems age, they often become less efficient, requiring more energy and more frequent repairs. The good news is that you don’t always need to invest in an entirely new machine to solve these problems.
